Nobody really knows how long Southern Fried Records has been going. Label founder, headhoncho and all round legend Norman ‘Fatboy Slim’ Cook first started releasing records under the SFR moniker at some point in the early to mid 90s.
So to celebrate their 16th, 17th or maybe even 18th anniversary, the label are releasing the third in a series of ‘Southern Fried & Tested 3‘ mix comps – 2CDs that showcase 13 brand new exclusives, un-released gems and some absolute classics from over the years.
CD1 – Mixed by The 2 Bears: The 2 Bears are Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) and Raf Rundell. The duo first began crossing paths in DJ booths across London and came together through a love and admiration for Detroit techno, Chicago house, hip hop, UK garage and dancehall. They ended up playing Back2Back sets and eventually writing and producing together.
2010 saw the release of two EPs from The 2 Bears, both of which were met with high acclaim at press and radio. They’ve since recorded a Radio One Maida Vale session, an Annie Mac Mini Mix and performed live at Gilles Peterson’s Christmas party.
CD2 – Mixed by Thomas Gandey: What a year it’s been for Thomas Gandey! The artist formally known as Cagedbaby put aside his masterful synth-pop writings to focus on producing his more dancefloor oriented techno infused house. 2010 saw the release of four double A-sides, releases that really reflect the music, excitement and atmosphere Mr Gandey brings to his DJ sets.
Pete Tong named ‘Mercy Hump’ as his Essential New Tune, Annie Mac championed ‘Trucks’, and his tracks have also had great radio support from the likes of Steve Smart, Loose Cannons, Andi Durrant and Jaymo & Andy George.
